What comes to mind when the words "Christian" and "Rap" are used together?
What comes to mind when the words "Holy" and "hip hop" are used together?
To some the words: sinful, rebellious, un-holy, and abomination come to mind; others view it to be a useful way to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ, artistic, creative, and inspirational. While the masses continue to debate, Preston Thompson aka Sir-Viva (pronounced sur-vy-vuh) has surfaced as an urban missionary to those who are influenced by the hip hop culture! With the hope of seeing the Children of God, turn toward the way of Jesus Christ and remove themselves from the many lusts and passions of this sinful world!
The Journey Begins when Sir-Viva {sur-vy-vuh}, born Preston ''Peety'' Thompson, JR. and his family move to Anchorage, Alaska from his birth place Goldsboro, NC. After serving sometime in the military, His Father Preston Sr. was discharged before successful completion of his Term, described by Sir-Viva as "the beginning of Survival". Faced with losing everything, his parents turned to alcohol and drugs to blind them from reality! Shortly after, Sir-Viva was split from all of his siblings and entered the foster care system. After being bounced around from the streets to shelters and group homes, Sir-Viva was taken into custody by Robin Willis, where she instilled the fundamentals of being a true Christian. One year later, he was taken into custody by his Grandmother. Though grateful, Sir-Viva could not handle the verbal abuse by his grandmother and decided to go back to what he new best, -fending for himself! After living on his own at the age of 15 he decided to go to Job Corps in hopes of a brighter future and emancipation! Upon receiving his G.E.D, Sir-Viva enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. But after joining the "Corps" he began to compromise his beliefs and developed a "Pity Party mentality" which hindered him from executing Gods will in his life. But one cold night in December 2002, Sir-Viva dedicated his life back to Jesus Christ and jump started his spiritual mission. Now married to Nakeisha Thompson (with three beautiful children) and both a veteran of the United States Marine Corps & The United States Army, Sir-Viva has been ministering the Gospel through rap since 2003 and is the co-founder and spokesperson for group The Lions of Judah.
Sir-Viva incorporates a lot of the flavor that he has been exposed to, while living all over the country into his music. With a passionate commitment to the kingdom of Christ and a firm belief that there is no room for compromise when it comes to the gospel, Sir-Viva has become known for his upfront style and devotion to proclaiming Jesus Christ. His testimony served as inspiration for his debut Christian Rap CD Titled- "I'm A Survivor"- and has laid a much-needed foundation for The Lions of Judah. Provocative tracks such as "God Aint Tellum to Write that" will challenge believers and non-believers alike to search the contents of the music we currently embrace! Tracks such as "I give praise to you"- Only exemplify Sir-Viva's true passion and appreciation for the Lord Jesus Christ, as well as encourage others to do the same. "I guarantee once you hear it you'll have to sing ityou cant help it" say's Sir-Viva. His sophomore album titled Luke 14:23 (In Action!) will definitely embed itself in the hearts of youth and adults alike around the country; challenging them to come out of there comfort zones, and glorify the Lord by taking the gospel of Jesus Christ to the streets.
Most recently, Sir-Viva traveled to Charlotte to take part in the First annual Carolina Holy Hip Hop Awards, where he recieved the "Rap Minister of the Year Award for SC". He Also Traveled to Alabama to take part in the HGS music awards (sponsored by Germaine Jakes), where he received the "Song of the Year Award" for the song - "God Aint Tellum to Write That!" He has also topped the Internet charts on the popular World Wide Web site, Rapzilla.com with this same song! The song "I give praise to you" Held the #3 spot simultaneously, until finally resting in the #2 spot for countless weeks. He has ministered at numerous events with an audience ranging from 4 people and a Pastor to venues like the Holy Hip Awards in Atlanta, Ga. He has been mentioned in U-Zone Magazine, and has been featured on countless compilation albums released worldwide such as Holy and Crunk Vol. 1, and Rap for God Vol. 1!
As Christian Rap continues to grow in its many directions, Sir-Viva stands in the company of ministers that refuse to allow the enemy to claim victory over today's youth! Watch out he's been hit but he can't be stopped with Christ on his side.
